Ways to Use Salt As A Cleaning Agent

This Makes Salt a Natural, Cost-Efficient Way to Keep Your Home Clean

Thanks to its granular texture, salt has the power to do a lot more than just season your dinner. When it comes to cleaning, salt is a natural alternative to many more expensive products. This makes salt a natural, cost-efficient way to keep your home clean.

Saving the Oven

The next time your food boils over in your oven, don’t give it a chance to bake on by only cleaning it once the oven is cool. You can prevent this from happening by using a bit of salt and baking soda. All you need to do is combine one-third of a cup of table salt with one cup of baking soda. Fill an unused spray bottle with water and liberally spray your oven surface. Allow the mixture to sit overnight. You’ll see that the residue will have loosened, making for easy cleanup.

Removing Rust

Unless it’s made out of stainless steel, chances are that things made out of metal will rust over time. Luckily, a bit of lime and salt can also be very effective in removing rust. Sprinkle some salt over the area of the object that has rusted to ensure that it is completely covered. Then, squeeze a lime all over it. Make sure you squeeze as much juice out of the lime as you can to make sure you get the best effect. After that, leave it for about 3-4 hours before you scrub it off.

Unclogging Your Kitchen Drain

After a while, your kitchen drain will start to clog because of all the food scraps that gather in the drain over time. Salt can help you unclog your drain and get rid of all the food scraps. After removing standing water from the sink, pour about half a cup of table salt down the drain before you pour in the boiling water. Let it sit for a few minutes, and then flush with hot water to clear the mixture.

Get Rid of Ants

Table salt is one of the best and the cheapest ways to get rid of ants naturally and without using any harmful chemicals. To use this trick, use ordinary table salt, not health boosting rock salt. All you need to do is to boil water and add a large amount of salt to it. Then stir it until the salt dissolves. Pour this mixture into a spray bottle and spray where you think ants tend to enter from. This will deter ants from coming close to the spot that you sprayed, so your home will be ant-free in no time.

Clean the Fridge

When cleaning your refrigerator, you might be tempted to use cleaning agents and other products that you can buy in the supermarket. However, these are usually full of chemicals that can linger on your food, produce bad odours and are generally not good for your health when they’re used in a place that stores food.

After emptying your fridge, just dissolve a cup of salt in a gallon of hot water and wipe away. Squeeze in the juice of a lemon for a nice scent. You’ll see that this salt mixture works just as well as the cleaners that you can buy in the store!

Freshen Up The Coffee Pot

Coffee stains can be quite stubborn as well, especially if you didn’t rinse the coffee pot right after using it. However, salt can be used to make your coffee pot look good again. Remove coffee stains from the inside of a glass coffee pot by adding 4 teaspoons of salt, 1 cup of crushed ice and 1 tablespoon of water. Then, swirl gently until the pot is clean, then rinse. Make sure the  coffee pot is at room temperature when you clean it, otherwise the difference in temperature might break it. Do not use this trick if the pot is cracked or chipped.

Remove Water Rings

When you forget to use coasters, your glasses or bottles can leave watermarks on the table. These don’t really do any damage, so you can leave them be if you want to, but most people understandably don’t like having these ‘stains’ on their table. Luckily, you can remove them with the help of a bit of salt. You can make these watermarks disappear by mixing 1 teaspoon of salt with a few drops of water to form a paste. Gently rub the paste onto the ring with a soft cloth or sponge and work it over the spot until it’s gone.

Revive Your Iron

When you iron your clothes, a lot of dirt that was on your clothes will get transferred to your iron, which in turn will cause it to work less well. To ensure this doesn’t happen, sprinkle a sheet of paper with salt and then run the warm iron over the salt. This will help remove stains and any lingering dirt from ironing your clothes. After a couple of runs, unplug the iron, and once it’s cooled, wipe it clean once with a soft cloth.

Polish Copper or Brass

Copper or brass might look nice and shiny in the beginning, but after a while, the shine disappears. This means that you need to polish your copper or brass. And luckily, you can do this with the help of salt, among a few other household items. You can either rub a mixture of 1 tablespoon of table salt and 1 cup of white vinegar onto the copper with a soft cloth and rinse. Or you can immerse the tarnished copper into a pot of 3 cups of water and the salt-vinegar mixture, bring it to a boil and boil until the grime and tarnish comes off.

Brighten Your Curtains and Rugs

Curtains and rugs make your interior look a lot better, but because they are exposed to a lot of dirt, they lose their color and shine very quickly. Simply dip a washcloth in a strong saltwater solution, wring it out, and then briskly rub the faded rugs and curtains. You’ll see that after a while, the colors will brighten. Make sure you use a clean washcloth, as using a dirty one might only cause the dirt on the rug or curtains to spread out. When you use a clean washcloth, the dirt will be absorbed and your rugs and curtains will look great once again!
